Xbox 360 vs PS3

Well, I was getting excited over the XBox 360. Then I saw the headline on Reuters for the Playstation 3, announced yesterday.

According to Sony, the PS3 will be powered by the “Cell,” confirming long time rumours. It will have twice the power of the XBox 360 chips, which is three 3.2GHz CPU’s melded together.

Better yet, the PS3 will support up to seven controllers wirelessly via Bluetooth technology. The new XBox will support up to four.

Furthermore, it will also feature a Blu-Ray DVD drive, which can hold much more data than the standard DVD format that the XBox 360 supports.

The Cell chip was designed hand-in-hand by Sony, IBM and Toshiba. It was always said that it has much more power than today’s Pentium 4 CPUs. The graphics processor “IRX” is made by NVidia, a win for them after loosing to ATI in the “Who will have the next XBox chip contract?” battle.

More features! Built in ethernet, portable hard drive, and is backwards compatible (Xbox 360 will be similar).

Now I’m excited about the new PS3, which looks like it will be leaps ahead of the XBox 360 in specs. The launch date will be Spring next year, while the XBox 360 will be released by Christmas, starting in the USA and then to Europe and Japan within six weeks, hoping to beat Sony.

Of course, the main factor about consoles is the games. Recently it was announced that Microsoft struck a deal with Square-Enix, the developer of the Final Fantasy games. Don’t know if this means they won’t be produced for the Playstation 3 or not, but they are going to port Final Fantasy XI on to the XBox (360 I think). So, it is best to wait for the games announcements. Microsoft hope to whip with Halo 3. Sony is yet to announce any breaking titles. The XBox 360 doesn’t look like it has any appealing games to me (again).

E3 is apparently this week, so look for some mud slinging, and a peep from Nintendo, who have under wraps their new console “Revolution.”
