And Nintendo today took out the prize for the worst console name ever to grace our eyes. The once codenamed Nintendo Revolution is now known as Nintendo Wii. This new name has found its way into the already thousands of puns that have been made on the internet.

Here is a selection from Slashdot:

• If the Wii’s can connect to eachother, would it be a ‘wiiwii’ ? And would I be in trouble if I told people I’m off playing with my friends and our WiiWii’s ? *
• 1) Shopper: “Hi. I see these are on sale. I would like to take a Wii.”
  2) Son, you’ve been playing with your Wii all day on that tiny monitor — give it a rest or you’ll go blind.
  3) Headline: Wii usage linked to possible repetitive stress injury? *
• Wii hates it, wii hates it, wii hates it for ever! *

I really liked the name “Revolution.” It really did capture what Nintendo were after. It was a codename that wasn’t attached to an animal or a place name, but an idea that would’ve been perfect.

Sorry Nintendo, Wii are not amused (oh, you wouldn’t hear the last of that one).
