yes, you are right, first load took approx 4-5 min, and after that only few seconds. it is working and it is very fast

I’ve been Googling trying to find help with my Gimp/Windows Vista problem. I hope it’s okay if I ask a question here. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

I downloaded GTK+2 Runtime Environment (version 2.10.6, for Windows 2000 and newer) and then downloaded GIMP for Windows (version 2.2.13). I used to have Gimp 1.2 when I had my old computer and I was quite happy with it. Now that I have the newer Gimp with Windows Vista, I’ve run into a problem when I draw (tablet pen or mouse), the lines are too clumpy and icky - no matter how I adjust the spacing (and it does stick when I first start drawing with the tablet pen). I’ve also made sure all of my tablet pen and mouse settings on the computer are correct.

Apparently the fonts aren’t being cached via my system. Gimp always hangs up when querying the fonts. Should I mimick the XP fix and delete the ‘fonts.cache-1′ file? (I found it under Computer/LocalDisk/Users/user_name in Vista)

Same problem as Xp. Try to delete fonts.conf from folder c:\programs files\common files\GTK\2.0\etc\fonts. Gimp now start without hang on querying fonts…

I got a problem in vista under gimpshop 2.18.
If I open a jpg and modify it, it works fine.
but when I create a new file, windows shouts that the program had a problem and closes it.
WTF !!!
any tips for me ?

Thank you so much Daniel. I wondered what was happening with Gimp on my new Vista loaded comp, and just never gave it enough time to load. And just as you said, the fonts are now cached and it takes no time at all to load.

Same with the gimp portable version - You just have to wait patiently few minutes when fonts are being cached

I also have the problem, that the fonts talkes maybe 20-25 sec to load in Vista.

Tried to delete fonts.conf from folder c:\programs files\common files\GTK\2.0\etc\fonts.

It helped, but now i have no fonts in my text tool. Any other surgestions - or maybe a way to Open Gimp with- and without fonts?

it does the same thing to me when running XP, although i have A LOT of fonts. it’s always done this on any computer i’ve used that has more than just a few fonts.

Hi, I also have the problem with the slow loading of fonts… i waited it out the first time while loading, but everytime I start it it does the same… will try and delete the fonts.conf in gtk2+ or just rename

I’ve problem using GIMP aplication under Vista.
I install GIMP under vista that had join to one domain.
And the problem is
if user from domain login to that computer and want to use GIMP, the vista always ask administrator privilage of my domain.
I’ve put my user account that same as administrator account domain but it’s not work.

Help me Please.

Don’t delete fonts.conf. Just edit it, replacing all and values with some folder that is writable in Vista for non-elevated applications (for example, C:\Temp). After that copy some .ttf fonts from Windows\Fonts folder into this new folder. GIMP will load fast and copied fonts will be available.

Add-in: values to replace are inside ‘dir’ and ‘cachedir’ tags. For some reason this blog don’t allow me to use angled bracer chars

Agreed with EyeOfHell. No need to delete fonts.conf. I just made that directory (C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\etc\fonts) “full control” for all users (which is only me on this machine) and the Gimp now loads fast. If anyone thinks there’s a serious security problem with the change I made, please holler back.

I’m new to Vista. In fonts.conf is a variable WINDOWSTEMPDIR_FONTCONFIG_CACHE. How can I find the value?

I’m using gimp for the first time (after using the adobe illustrator’s free trial) and I haven’t had a chance to use it. When I open gimp 2 or gimp shop, I get a windows pop up saying, ” there was a problem running gimp and we are taking an error report and will send you the results. Gimp will close now” Ok… what is that all about? Can you clear the air for me? Thanx! I’m using Vista, by the way.

Hi I am running windows vista i want to install gimp i have installed the correct GTK when i click on the gimp setup it still comes up install GTK and wont install anyone know

It doesn’t work well with my vista. Like you said, it ‘freezes’ in fonts for a while. Even after that, the next time i opened it, it still took long. Now it just goes to “not responiding after a while…and what do you know, it loaded as soon as i finished that sentnece. I’ve been re-opening it three times, now, guess third times the charm.

I have the same issue with vista, it just stops responding at fonts. I uninstalled and reinstalled GTK but still the same. HELP PLEASE!

Worked for me, i had hundreds of fonts on xp so the long wait time for fonts to load was usuall ( 2 minutes or longer the first time after install), it still loads faster than photoshop or photoimpact 12 for me, plus it is easier to use in my personal opinion.

Wow, my fonts thing didn’t even freeze! It just kept on installing! Thanks to my Core 2 Extreme Processor overclocked at 3.2 GHz

Ummmm whats the solution to fixing my GIMP! When i open an existing file everything is fine… but if i open a new image windows closes it … i read all the comments here and i didnt get a solution maybe i missed it? Please HELP!!! (oh on Windows vista!)

Base install package worked great for me, fonts only hung for about 20 seconds then it was done with the install.

Can’t get GTK installed. Downloaded the 2.10.13-setup from the GIMP site, but I get an error:

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:1208….
Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.

Suggestions?

If your running version 2.2 of the Gimp and it is hanging on 32-bit Vista, then please check out my blog entry to see if the workaround I have written helps.

The new version of the gimp seems to have solved this issue (at least it has for me). It will be slow the first time, but it caches the fonts and all subsequent start-ups should be a lot quicker.

I know it was way back in, like, May of 2007 I think but I saw someone had a problem with opening a new file in GimpShop under windows Vista. The could open an existing file but when opening a new one the program would crash. I have that problem as well and have found no software fix for it. However, what I dis is open an existing file, select all, clear it so it’s blank and then save it as a new file. That way if I want to make a new jpeg I open blankgimpdoc.jpg and start from there. You can easilly change the image size and resolution to match what you plan to work on.
