Jump back

I finally had enough of it. It was eating everything like an all-you-can-eat buffet, it started to get a bit wobbly and needed some encouragement to get walking.

Yes, I’ve jumped back to Windows XP. After five months of running Vista, annoying things that I tried to push to the back of my mind I just couldn’t take anymore. My computers got this weird snap in its step now - I open the start menu and it just appears. I open My Computer, and my hard drive isn’t churning. It’s refreshing. In fact, I can’t hear my hard drive clicking over for once. I press buttons on my keyboard and they worked. I didn’t have to overwrite official drivers with older ones to get my sound card to work. It’s like a strange new world, that feels familiar.

I finally did it. I finally made it back to XP.

(Update: And I’m already missing the search!)

How does Google Desktop Search act on Windows? Might it perhaps be a suitable replacement?

I don’t really like the interface to GDS, and Google is starting to scare me a little (search results to your computer appear on Google.com internet search results, etc). The benefit to GDS though is that I can get extensions for it to read more formats easily. I believe Windows Search (Vista) and Windows Desktop Search have the same functionality. I’m thinking of getting Windows Desktop Search, it’s more integrated, and is essentially the same as Windows Instant Search in Vista. Speaking of which, I see version 4.0 is coming out soon and will search everything (including the web).
