Block Facebook quizzes from your news feed

One of the most annoying recent trends on Facebook are user created quizzes. They seemed fun at the time, but now they’ve gone ridiculous, in fact, we’re waiting on an “Are you a gay potato?” quiz to turn up at some stage. There is also the other dubious technique of not having any company associated with it, yet people seem quite happy to give them permission to use their profile data as they see fit.

I had enough, the number of quizzes was getting out of hand, and instead of turning up on Facebook to see how my friends are doing, I’ll just get a barrage of quiz results, from the type of smile someone has, when they would get married… stuff I don’t really care about. I discovered a Facebook Purity Greasemonkey extension… I think on Twitter… and it worked wonders, but it was overzealous and blocked some genuine applications. So I modded it, and here’s the link. First, you must install Greasemonkey for it to do anything.

It will only block quizzes and trivia, and has a handy block in the upper right to show them again. Choice! Now I found out useful happenings about my friends.

Credit goes out to Steeev for the original script.

Update I have been asked by the author of the original script to take my version down. You can get the original script from Steeev’s website.

Any chance of making this into a FF addon? I haven’t taken the plunge w/ GreaseMonkey yet… but would love to block all these BS quizzes!!

What apps does it block?
I installed it, and my FB page currently has several quizzes from my friends, but NONE of them were blocked.

THANK YOU! I was wondering how many more dozens of quizzes I had left to block.

June 10th, 2009 4:08 am

Awesome!

Is there any chance to block useless groups notifications too?

In Italy is in use to join a lot of trivial groups, like
“for everybody who has seen McGyver during his/her childhood, join in!”
(with all the respect to McGyver, of course)

Brian: Greasemonkey is a Firefox addon, which, in itself does nothing with out a script like this one.

June 10th, 2009 4:30 am

No joke, this SINGLE script might make me swap from Opera to Firefox.

June 10th, 2009 4:33 am

How do I make this work? I’m computer dumb.

Harry
June 10th, 2009 4:56 am

I just read the release notes…

You need FireFox 3 and Greasemonkey to make it work

Jacob: if you have FireFox 3 installed, you will also need a program called Greasemonkey (it is installed onto Firefox).

Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748 to get it.

@Brian @Robbie

It’s better as a greasemonkey/userscript than as a Firefox extension — it’s now cross-browser compatible with anything that supports that (Firefox, Opera, Chrome, etc.).

What is wrong with you all? Seriously! You don’t need scripts. Facebook has this option built in. When you see your status update on the bottom right (the “notifications” area), click on “See all”. Hey look, over on the right side you have the option to UNCHECK which notifications you don’t want to get.

June 10th, 2009 7:56 am

Thank you, Nathan. In my defense, and probably a few other folks here, Facebook doesn’t make it very easy to find things like that. I’ve looked several times before and have never seen that page before. I will be preaching it from the top of my page from here on out. Thank you, Nathan, Daniel and Steeev!

June 10th, 2009 10:32 am

Thank you all for your comments and links.

There are some newer quizzes which this won’t block due to certain differences, but I hope to update it sometime soon. And yes, I do know that quizzes show up when you click the “Older” link, but it should still be blocking quizzes after the first Ajax load (when you scroll down the page).

@Nathan Walker: Yes, Facebook has that function, but the problem with the quizzes is there are so many of them and they are all separate apps, that you have to Hide it for every single type. This hides them automagically.

I haven’t had quizzes send notifications to me before, but I’m sure they probably would at one point (I hope not) so I’ll see what I can do when I start getting them.

June 10th, 2009 10:35 am

I’ve already installed it and it works like a charm. I disabled it for a sec just to check and I was instantly bombarded with a load of crappy quiz results. My only concern is, if I install this, I won’t ever find out

“what sandal am I?”
http://www.facebook.com/apps/directory.php#/apps/application.php?id=6116158814&ref=appd

and I’ve always wanted to know.

My husband helped me. After you’ve installed Greasemonkey, close your browser, then re-open. Go back to this page, then click the link “here’s the link.” If you see a buncha code, click the bar at the top of the page to remove the FB frame. It should automatically load at that point– the rest is self-explanatory, I think? That frame caused problems for me.

Here are some of my postings from sitonmyfacebook….and many thanks for the solution

April 22 2009
All hail the bogus catechism to catch the attention of the masses, who, sans sense, are captive to a superficiality of response based on degraded attentional abilities and the constant need for superficial familiarity and a totally false sense of belonging. The next quiz will either be – “What intestinal parasite was I inside a cow?” or “Which part of of the mindless mob am I?”

April 19 2009
With the retail ubiquity of quiz themes, denuded of history and context we could go crazy, and given the unlimited capacity for self-dumbing, we could even make some money! What type of body odour are you quiz? Which bimbo cleavage are you quiz? What type of chromosomal abnormality did you really want to be quiz? That’s only for starters….more to come.

‘April 18 2009
Talk is cheap because supply exceeds demand and online quizzes are the perfect nutrient for docile consumers with dumb leisure appetites. I need some help in strip-mining facebook culture – with the apogee of this species of dumbness being the online quiz, why not write some and cash in on the narcissistic devaluation of self-knowledge.

April 16 2009
Take another online quiz -Is this the online globalisation of clevering down? – nothing wrong with lowest common denominator wallpaper – take the “what sexually transmitted disease are you quiz?” – maybe I’ve just got a lower intolerance quotient to this fatuous and asinine opiate of the masses – maybe I should take the “which inane quiz are you” quiz? – Let them eat quiz!
