New TradeMe microsummary generator

9

Well, I made a TradeMe microsummary generator for Firefox 2.0 some time back when the feature was first announced. Since then I don’t think it has actually worked, especially now that TradeMe has updated their look.

So, here is a new one.

How to use it:

  1. Go to a TradeMe auction page, like this one.
  2. Click on Bookmarks, then Bookmark this Page.
  3. Click on the little arrow on the Name combo and select the live title.

You may want to put it on your Bookmarks Toolbar.
  4. Click OK, you’re all done!

Now it is time to get back to work.

Support the development of PSP MusicBox

I have just put up a Paypal donate button on the PSP MusicBox page. For kicks, I’ll even put it here (it works now):

Make payments with PayPal - it's fast, free and secure!

Please note, that the software is still free, and always will be as long as I’m around. I’m just putting it there so then if you ever feel like supporting a poor student, you can. I develop the software in my spare time, which is why development tends to be slow. But you are all happy with 2.0 now right?

I have been hard at work on the new version, due around Christmas sometime (hopefully) or even sooner. The guy testing the product has had some positive stuff to say about it, which is good. Speed is a big one, and this one is faster. It is a complete rewrite of the software, so it is still in the process of getting up to the point where version 2.0 is now, though it isn’t too far off.

Oh, and if you want to test version 3.0, just leave a comment for me (with your e-mail in the e-mail field) and I’ll get back to you.

Lots of blog updates

As you can tell, there have been a lot of changes to the website. Here’s a run down.

  • New navigation links - to the right, you’ll notice that the main links of the site have nice large buttons for you to click on.
  • Shoutbox - Also to the right, leave a message in the live shoutbox. That’s right, it is live, you’ll see the updates to the discussion as they happen (almost).
  • Tags - I can now tag posts using Technorati style keywords. You’ll notice them and you can click them to see the others.
  • Combined Archives - The archives pages have all been combined into a single archives page, which has the tags (with real tag cloud functionality), months and categories.
  • New About Me page - I’ve decided to put some stuff on it.
  • coComment integration - I’ve told you about this before, and now this site is integrated with it. You don’t need to be signed up to track them either!
  • Search box moved - It’s now in the top right.

Some things may be broken over the next couple of days, just put it in the shoutbox and I’ll take note.

Rallying the troops - help PSP MusicBox

6

I’m looking for anyone who is interested in helping out PSP MusicBox. It won’t be anything to do with programming. More feedback, opinions, trying out new versions and being apart of some army to try and promote it. If you’d be interested, then feel free to leave a comment or e-mail daniel [dot] mckenzie [at] g[nospam]mail [dot] com (or click the e-mail link to the right). I’ll be interested to see what the response to this would be.

The re-rewrite of PSP MusicBox 3.0 is trucking along. Some new stuff has been implemented (for real this time), with more being planned, and possibly a new direction to it.

And we all welcome the return of functional services after the server decided to go all emo on us. After Alastair and Gian spent a few days bringing it back up, and they successfully did.

Time to try and dominate the world again (mwahahaha)!

Update The second time it returns, it is back up for more than 24hours!

More microsummary generators

I hope you enjoyed yesterdays TradeMe microsummary generator, if you got the chance to try it out. After last nights fun of creating them, I decided to make more today.

  • TVNZ Headline
Use this on any of TVNZ.co.nz’s main pages (such as the homepage, news, national news, TV One page, whatever) and it’ll give you the main headline (the one in the big box on the top left of the page).
  • Orcon Status
If you use Orcon as your service provider you can get the latest Orcon system status from this page. Bookmark that page, and select this summary, and it will give you the latest at a glance.
  • Wikipedia Featured Article
Learn something new everyday, this will give you the name of the featured article on the Wikipedia home page (select your language first).
  • Uncyclopdia Featured Article
Learn something… well, forget learning on Uncyclopedia. This will give you the name of the featured article on the Uncyclopedia home page (just like the Wikipedia one).

To learn how to use this (and also to check out the TradeMe one) see my other article on microsummaries.

TradeMe Microsummary

I just installed the latest Firefox 2 alpha, and did a little playing around with Microsummaries.

For those that don’t know, a new feature has been added in Firefox 2 that will allow you to get quick, at-a-glance, information on a page. You basically bookmark the page and then select a summary that you want to use. The bookmark will then update periodically with the latest information.

I decided to make my own, so I thought, what’s the best thing to start out with? TradeMe! So I made a TradeMe microsummary.

So, I’ll show you how to get it working. First off, you’ll need at least Firefox 2 alpha 2. I’m using alpha 3, and it is very usable. Download that from here. (Note: This is alpha software, which means that you should expect horrible things to happen. If you do come across a bug, make sure you go to the MozillaZine forums and discuss it. Other than that, have fun!).

  • First up, we need to install the microsummary generator. You need to do this because TradeMe doesn’t yet offer one. Install the TradeMe generator! It is only a small 1kb (if that) file. You’ll be prompted if you do really want to install it. Click Yes. That was easy.
  • Now, freely browse around TradeMe. Found something you like? Go to its page, then from the menu select Bookmarks - Bookmark This Page.

  • In the Summary drop down box, select the summary that has been generated.
    microsummary-2.png
Select where you want to save it (I think this only works on the Bookmarks Toolbar at the moment, however not completely sure), and click OK.
  • You’re done! Now it’ll regularly tell you what the current bid is at.

Thanks to the tutorial and some of the example generators.

More information can be found here. Expect some more from me soon.

Blog touch ups

Well, this is the first of some changes being made around here. I’ve tidied up some things, remade others. Hope you like.

Oh, and after months of deliberating as to what to call my blog, I’m just going to call it “Daniel’s View.” Why? Well, with “Daniel’s Blog,” it was my blog, but didn’t really reflect the content. It isn’t a site just about me, as is common about blogs with “blog” in the name. Plus I’m really uncreative when it comes to names.

If you have a MySpace profile, feel free to add me as a friend.

PSP MusicBox latest firmware support

12:35am · PSP MusicBox

Sony released version 2.7 of the firmware, with little word from the websites I regularly read. Don’t worry though, I found out. And here is a quick update to support AAC files. Currently, it supports copying AAC, M4A and M4P files. I’m not entirely sure if the PSP does support these files, and apparently AAC support has been in since 2.0 from the sites I’ve read. PSPMB will automatically rename M4A files to AAC for you. If any of these files actually don’t work, then please comment here and I’ll remove it, or if you know which file formats it does support then tell me too. I haven’t moved over to 2.7 yet, I probably will however but not just yet. While I don’t use homebrew much, I do like the option of being able to use it.

To enable AAC support, check the “I have 2.70 installed” box on the General tab.

Also fixed in 2.0.2 is the infinate deletion hierarchy bug.

(In other news, PSP MusicBox 2.0 has been downloaded over 500 times since its release!)

One year later

9:42pm · My Blog

My blog has now been running for a whole year. In actual fact, this is not my first blog. I’ve had many incarnations of a blog in some form. They always, however, got caught out when the web host would go down, typically without warning. Fortunately my last host warned me before they went down, which let me go onto this webhost, which is kindly supported and run by Gian and Alastair. Cheers guys, without you my blog would probably be ready for deletion on some lost web server.

I started my blog on the 21st of April 2005 with this little post. The original idea was to have a personal blog, however I quickly realised my life is rather uninteresting, or more, why would someone want to read soley about me?

It has evolved a lot since then, undergoing three theme changes (I’ve got to cut back), and been caught in the flow of the web. There are 340 posts, ranging from what happened at university, to the New Zealand elections, through to simple tricks I’ve found on the internet (and my personal cries about the failings of Internet Explorer).

People have done various searches of people to reach my web site, “adam levine” is popular (check it here), “alison mau” is popular for some reason (recently dumped Prime TV journalist), “wendy petrie” picked up (One News presenter), and even “lee tamahori.” Playboy cards, UMD pornography, PSP, kissing, gay actors and Dynamo Go are all in there too.

Anyway, I’d like to thank everyone who has visited, still visits and even subscribes to this blog. As you can tell, it is much, much more that just about me. You may notice things may change a little, but that’s just how things go. Here’s hoping for another year of blogging!
