Fantail 0.1.1 (re-)released

5

Update If you were still having issues before, I have reuploaded it. It should solve this mess.

Fantail 0.1.1 has just been uploaded. Sorry about the lateness, unfortunately a back-up went awry causing me to rewrite the minimal install script.

This actually fixes two problems:

  • Will no longer suffer from the Twitpocalypse. A database conversion needs to take place, so it may take a minute or two to get going at first.
  • Has the sending bug fix that affected a number of people at random instances.

First experiences with the Vodafone Live Music Store

I must say I was pleased. Just before heading out to Australia I had this song running through my head, and I just had to get it out (Run, Run, Run by Goldenhorse). It being a New Zealand band, and me not having it, and lately discovering I can download full tracks to my phone, I decided I had mightaswell purchase it. I was a bit put off by the price ($2) but figured that I am paying for the convenience of downloading it now. It was quick and painless to buy the song and then download it onto my mobile – you just use the web browser on the phone itself.

My SonyEricsson W850i though has a little trouble accessing the music, it seems to take a while to read the track before it can actually play it, but I’ve survived.

Last night I was once again having New Zealand music go through my head and decided to make a couple more purchases. It sent me a text this time telling me I could download the track at the store. I thought I’d check it out when I get to a computer next. Here’s the bonus, you can download the tracks to your computer as well without making an extra purchase (as a DRM’d WMA, but you can get around that).

To be honest, I’d rather purchase the CD. On the other hand, it’s a nice service to get that song swimming in your head out of there.

Hibernation troubles?

Hibernation is my favourite power saving method – I press my power button and my computer powers down. I press it again and it starts up again, but with everything exactly the way I left it. Sleep never gave me the same satisfaction of reducing my power usage. But Windows XP gave me troubles with this upgraded machine of mine. I’d press the power button, Windows will proclaim it’s about to hibernate, but everything goes horribly wrong, the screen cuts out, comes back in, with a nice little balloon telling me

Windows – System Error: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API.

How can their be insufficient resources? I have 220GB+ free on my hard drive! The system logs tell me nothing either.

Well, it appears that Windows does have troubles from time-to-time when your RAM exceeds 1GB. Go to the Knowledge Base article 909095 and download the hot fix patch there (you won’t find it in Windows Update). The problem should now be fixed.

Excellent.

[Tip: Tales from the Crypto]

The more information in the KB article says:

To prepare the computer to hibernate, the Windows kernel power manager requires a block of contiguous memory. The size of this contiguous memory is proportional to the number of physical memory regions that the computer is using. A computer that uses lots of RAM is likely to use more physical memory regions when the computer prepares to hibernate. Therefore, a larger amount of contiguous memory is required to prepare the computer to hibernate.

Additionally, the number of physical memory regions varies according to the programs, services, and device drivers that the computer uses. Therefore, the hibernate feature occasionally fails.

That still doesn’t explain why it failed on my machine… oh well.
