Next Eudora to be open, free

Eudora Mail used to be the mail client to have, until it was quickly overruled by Outlook Express and other free mail clients. Now, they have announced that the next version of the popular mail client will be open source, free, and based on Mozilla Thunderbird.

This is great news. I’m not particularly impressed by Outlook Express, or its replacement in Vista – Windows Mail. I’m also not terribly happy about Mozilla Thunderbird. So depending on Eudora turns out, we’ll have another, quite substantial, competitor in the market. I’m quite excited by it.

But why are they doing this? According to their FAQ:

QUALCOMM has decided not to remain in the email market because it is not in alignment with the core business or strategic goals. By moving Eudora to an open source product, QUALCOMM can exit the Eudora business while still supporting Eudora users and advancing the Eudora e-mail client at a faster pace than before, through the power of the open source development community.

Quite an interesting approach to exiting the market.

The final commercial release, 7.1, was also released. It is at a massively discounted rate (though, I’m not sure why they don’t just release it free). It can be bought from Eudora’s website.
