Playstation 3 “the most pre-ordered console yet”

1:54pm · Tech ·

Well this had surprised me, it appears that the Playstation 3 is selling like hotcakes in Europe.

Head of games [at Play.com] Gian Luzio told GI that PlayStation 3 orders are six times higher than Xbox 360 and a whopping fifteen times more than Wii. Play did not fulfill all of their Wii and Xbox 360 pre-orders.

Well, I guess this does shut up critics a little, especially after the poor performance of the PS3 in America and Japan. Looks like things aren’t all lost for the Sony console.

Playstation 3s freeze up “on purpose”

2:59pm · Tech · , ,

Apparently PS3 kiosks around the states keep freezing up and there are annoyed store clerks having to reset them. A story appeared on Slashdot today that says that they are freezing on purpose.

I’m totally confused at this point, completely stunned at what I’m being told because it’s the stupidest thing I’d ever heard. I let him rattle on for a while, trying to convince me (and probably himself) that yes, Sony went out of their way to have their consoles lock up so that the masses will not spend hours upon hours basking in all its glory.

Most ridiculous thing I’ve heard. A nice cover-up that any dimwitted person would just go “Oh yeah,” and not pass judgment. But, gamers are far from that - well, most of them.

The comments on the linked article are well worth reading, especially the ones from gamez1.

YOU STUPID FUCKS - PLAYSTATION BROUGH SOME OF THE GREATEST GAMES OUT - STOP WHINNING PUSSIES

WHO EVER MADE THAT COMMENT IS A NINTENDO LOVER AND TAKES IT IN THE BUTT

Once you find it, read down. Delightful.

Of course, a demo-mode may have been planned but scrapped because it was getting much too close to the deadline, but seriously, freezing up? That could put anyone off who did not know that it was “on purpose.”

PS3 launches in US; Open Platform site opened

1:22am · Entertainment · ,

ps3-band2.jpg
Officially the Playstation 3 has launched in the US to queues of awaiting fans. But hey, it’s already been out in Japan for a week.

The main point of this post is to point out that Sony has now launched the Open Platform website. From here you can get full instructions on installing compatible Linux distributions onto your PS3. Compatible distributions are those that have a PPC build (which is almost all of them) and a PS3 bootloader (which is apparently kboot). Fedora Core 5 has been confirmed to have full support, and Yellow Dog Linux is also available.

This enables you to use your PS3 as if it was a normal computer. The PS3 can be set to boot into Linux by default (this can be overridden by holding down the power button for 5 seconds).

Now those of us in European territories have to wait until March next year for the Playstation 3 to reach our shores. However, SCEE are creating some pretty neat marketing short-films that can be viewed on their website (in HiDef even).

Lines are forming for the PS3

10:48pm · Tech · , ,

All the critics said that it wouldn’t sell. Well, proof is in the pudding really, as nine-days from the US launch of the Playstation 3 from Sony, queues are already forming - some as early as the start of the week. This story on VideoGamesBlogger.com has pictures and videos.

Jokes are even being said by passers-by such as “Where is the line for the PS4. The other side?” O-ho-ho-ho-ho.

This is all quite interesting. I don’t believe lines started forming this early for the Xbox 360 (or not reported via the many news sites I go to). But it also appears to slap critics right in the face who said that Sony is doomed to fail because of the high price.

However, it doesn’t show what future sales of the console will be like either.

I have also read (somewhere) that there are only a few (less than 10) PS3’s per store available in the US, so I hope the stores turn away the extras waiting in line. I’d hate to be number 10 in line waiting all week only to be turned away due to lack of supply.

A version of Linux confirmed for PS3

4:17pm · Tech · ,

Terrasoft has today announced that they will be making their Yellow Dog Linux available for the PlayStation 3 - but not with it. You’ll have to either burn it or buy it yourself (though, you’ll have to wait a month of the PS3’s release before you can get it free).

This is some good news as to knowing that there will be a Linux platform in the Playstation 3, but we are still waiting on confirmation of an official version from Sony. They have said in the past that every PS3 hard drive will come with Linux pre-installed, however not much has been said since.

The PS3 is a month out from release now, so expect lots more details about specifics to be released.
